In 2014, Esquire Philippines’ founding Editor-in-Chief Erwin Romulo brought the band, The Eraserheads, back together in the
studio for the first time since disbanding in 2002. They produced two new tracks that were to be included in a special EP for release along with Esquire’s September issue. I was asked to do the cover and packaging and I came up with this minimalist design consisting of 4-colored blocks, an individual color to represent each band member, forming an inverted E, the iconic symbol that the band was known for in the ’90s.

Director Marie Jamora commissioned me to design the vinyl sleeve for the soundtrack of her CineMalaya film “Ang Nawawala (What Isn’t There).” The story is set against the backdrop of the local indie music scene so I wanted the design to have a rough, unprocessed look – kind of like a hand-drawn-on-the-spot gig poster.

The cover illustration is my take on what I felt the most memorable scene in the film was, a sweet bedroom dance party for two. Since the film is about twins and the quest for their identities, “side A” and “side B” of the record were represented with images of the siblings.

The actual record is clear which is also a subtle nod to the title and the feeling of emptiness that comes before one ultimately finds him/her sense of self.

Eheads Boxed Set

I was commissioned by Sony Music to design a box set for the Eraserheads. The band was already disbanded at the time but they got together for a massively attended reunion concert the year before.

Having designed 4 albums, 2 fanzines, a picture book, and several side-project albums for the Eheads in the ’90s, the record company felt that I could gather all those experiences and come up with an idea for the boxed compilation.

The result was a tin container emboss-printed with an inverted E (the band’s symbol) made up of doodled elements that represented their songs. Inside the box is a thick “scrapbook” of old photos juxtaposed with the band’s story, song lyrics, and other info that encompassed their 9 years in the business. The box also contained CDs of all their albums and a special commemorative t-shirt.

Local band Imago commissioned me to design their album “Effect Desired” None.” I was given MP3s of the songs along with striking black & white photos of the band members. Listing down words that stood out to me from the songs, I came up with a design that I felt translated the cheerful & relaxed vibe of the music, incorporating a few bright colors here and there to complement the monochromatic images.
