Meals at home regularly consisted of\u00a0 kare-kare, mechado, bringhe, and other Pinoy dishes lovingly prepared by my Kapampangan mom. She is a pediatrician so I was almost never absent in school &#8211; there was no excuse to skip classes because I couldn&#8217;t pretend to be sick. ;D Education is very important to my parents. <\/em><em>My dad, a historian and archaeologist, would give my brother and me factual background lectures of just about any place (or anything) we encounter, and always emphasized the importance of preserving the Filipino heritage.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>These days, it feels like many of us are more familiar with what\u2019s foreign than what\u2019s ours, and I\u2019m 100% guilty of this too. I listen to J\u2011pop, watch K\u2011dramas, and take selfies with cherry blossoms. A few years ago, I wouldn\u2019t have been able to name native flowers like salingbobog or katmon, but I would\u2019ve recognized a rose or peony right away.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span>The internet has made the world smaller, which is wonderful, but it also made me realize how easily we can forget our own stories, species, and landscapes. Apples, grapes, and oranges were \u201cspecial\u201d treats because tropical fruits like&nbsp;<em>lanzones<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>makopa<\/em>&nbsp;(wax apple), and&nbsp;<em>duhat<\/em>&nbsp;(black palm) were inexpensive accessible options \u2013 in fact, they grew in our backyard. Newcomers at the time, McDo and KFC were not as ubiquitous as local franchises Tropical Hut Hamburger and Max Fried Chicken. There was no internet so playing&nbsp;<em>piko<\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>patintero<\/em>&nbsp;and having picnics at Parks &amp; Wildlife was the equivalent of social media for my generation. My dad &amp; mom hail from the provinces of Pangasinan &amp; Pampanga respectively so road trips on traffic-free highways and meriendas consisting of native delicacies were a regular thing.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>These days when we listen to mainstream OPM sometimes it\u2019s hard to tell if they were composed or performed by Filipinos. Everywhere we look in the mall we are faced with brands from all parts of the world. When we check Instagram or Facebook we see fellow Pinoys\u2019 photos of cherry blossoms and snow-capped mountains. Globalization is a good thing. It means progress. But somehow our identity as Filipinos has become muddled. If drawing from my memories of the old days can contribute even a small part in preserving our heritage, then that would be awesome.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:separator -->\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n<!-- \/wp:separator -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><br><strong>The Formal Bio<\/strong><\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Illustrator &amp; graphic designer Cynthia Bauzon Arre majored in Visual Communication at the UP College of Fine Arts and took up graphic design at Parsons School of Design in New York City. She worked in advertising and won international awards including a CLIO for her art direction work, later moving on to become the founding Design Director of Wedding Essentials magazine. As a freelance artist, she is best known for her album designs for the Eraserheads, Itchyworms, &amp; other rock bands.
