Until a few years ago, I didn’t know either. I was working on a “Bahay Kubo<\/a>” illustration when I learned that none<\/span> of the vegetables in the song are indigenous to the Philippines. This sparked my interest, leading me to uncover more surprising facts. Did you know that beloved flora like Gumamela, Bougainvillea, and even our national flower, the Sampaguita, are exotic species? Meanwhile, natives like Katmon, Salingbobog, or Bagawak Morado remain lesser-known.<\/span><\/p>\n Native trees don’t get much recognition too. You might’ve heard of misguided reforestation efforts that make use of Mahogany and Gmelina arborea.<\/em> Not only are they introduced species, they are also invasive, posing threats to our native flora.<\/span><\/p>\n Ever wonder why a seemingly sturdy tree can be uprooted easily during a typhoon? It might be an introduced species struggling in our local climate. Native trees, on the other hand, gracefully adapt, showcasing resilience in extreme weather. They play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity, forming intricate networks with birds, insects, and other species, offering them homes and sanctuary.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Thanks to Forest Foundation Philippines<\/a> and our<\/span>\u00a0#DrawNativeTreesPH Initiative<\/a> in 2018, I’ve come to appreciate the important ecological role of native biodiversity. My ongoing mission is to raise awareness about the crucial link between flora, fauna, and forest conservation amidst climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n If you’re new to this site, I hope you can explore the creations in the shop that carry the essence of this mission and share them with others.
